And, because you are a woman, and considered too "dainty" to travel, you have to stay behind even though you will miss him terribly and you would really love to see China and see pandas.

Then imagine that, over a year into the journey, your husband dies! This is the tragedy and heartache that befell Mrs Harkness in the mids.

Where others may have crumpled, Mrs. Harkn Imagine that, two months after you finally marry your dear friend of ten years, he goes off to Asia to look for giant pandas.

Harkness was courageous and dared to complete the mission her husband began. Many people told her she couldn't, or shouldn't, do it. But she did travel and she did find a baby panda to bring back to the United States.

While I admire Mrs. Harkness' spirit, I was deeply troubled by a story that seemed so enthusiastic about taking a young panda from the wild, taking it on a long and dangerous journey, and holding it in captivity.

Of course, I realize this was a different age, with a different way of thinking, but it still troubled me.

Thankfully, the author's note makes mention of this and how it might be troublesome to our modern sensibilities about wildlife.

She also notes, though, the many good things that happened because of Mrs. Harkness and her panda. For one, many people fell in love with pandas and wanted to do good things for them and the hunting of wild pandas even decreased, and pandas have gone on to become symbols for some of the most important wildlife conservation societies.

Given that the author's note takes into account both the troublesome aspects and the good in Mrs. Harkness' act, and that the book is engagingly written and illustrated, I feel comfortable granting it four stars though parents and teachers may want to be ready to discuss these aspects with their children.

This is a dramatic and true tale of a woman who completes her husband's quest to bring a panda to the United States.

I liked that the story gave us a glimpse into life in the s and explains that pandas were virtually unknown to the general populace at that time.

I also liked that Ruth was willing to fly in the face of popular opinion that women were too dainty and unable to attempt such an endeavor.

Who doesn't love cute pandas and wouldn't want to read about them? Alicia Potter's introduction to Ruth McCombs Harkness, who brought the first panda to America, is supplemented by the bright colorful illustrations of Melissa Sweet.

Can you imagine getting on a security line these days while carrying a baby panda bear? HARKNESS AND THE PANDA is the picture book story of how Ruth Harkness ignored skeptics and naysayers, got her late husband's warm adventurer clothing tailored down to her size, teamed up with a young man who knew the Chinese bamboo forests and had seen pandas, and proceeded to travele by ship, by vehicle, by foot, and sometimes by sedan chair upriver and up-mountain to where they eventually found a panda cub they named Su Lin.

Fortunately, Mrs. Harkness had packed a baby bottle and some baby formula that was then put to good use while she and the baby giant panda spent a month making their way from China to San Francisco.

Artist Melissa Sweet once again uses her award-winning talent for incorporating objects into her mixed media illustrations.

The second time I read it I savored the rich illustrations done on actual Chinese paper and the incorporation of Chinese words.

The third time I discovered how well it worked as a read-aloud book. Later I noticed how the illustrations start almost as flat cartoons and become richer in detail and complexity until in the end actual photographs are incorporated.

It was as if the illustrator was emphasizing how the life of Mrs. Harkness came into focus around the panda. I am sure there are still more things to be uncovered.

Harkness and the Panda supplies endless opportunities for learning. It definitely would be great to accompany a geography or history unit on China.

It also brings up science issues, and could be used with a discussion of endangered animals. The illustrations could be a source of inspiration for numerous art projects, particularly collage.

Finally, it would be wonderful to add to a Chinese New Year celebration. It will be a book you will come back to again and again.

An interesting telling of a little known story of how the first panda came to the U. This was in the late s, a time when it was astonishing for a woman to head off on an expedition.

The story is brief since it is aimed at early elementary ages. As an adult reader, I found myself wanting to know more, but this book is about right for the intended audience.

More could have done to explain how different China must have been to the U. I also would have liked a map at the end showing the entire journey.

I was a little disconcerted to read about the taking of a baby panda, but was glad to see the author's note in which she commented on this.

Melissa Sweet once again produces beautiful collage illustrations. I particularly like the page on which the sea journey is depicted and postcards from the time I assume are used.

Another page appears to echo Chinese scroll paintings with the four panels to show the journey on foot. May 09, Carrie rated it really liked it.
